BUCK GARDNER CALLS- Brad’s Reactor
By Tom Cannon

Buck Gardner

When someone spends their lifetime blowing a duck call, building duck calls and tinkering with duck calls, it tends to rub off on those close by. Take Buck Gardner for instance. Obviously, a successful caller and call maker, but also father as well. Now hanging around with Buck day in and day out, like his son Brad does, some of that duck calling talent is bound to wear off. Imagine a chip off the old block so to speak.

After a hunt a few years ago, Brad got the urge to experiment with constructing a new double reed call. It seems his hunting buddy was searching for a double reed duck call that would blow and sound similar to a single reed call. Brad began fiddling with various calls and designs. Heck, he even constructed the bore with an electric hand held drill. Once he felt he was getting close to the objective, he began to “hunt” the call. Ducks responded to the call very well, especially late season pressured birds. After six months or so of final adjustments, they began to machine a few prototypes for their staff to field test. The results were very encouraging!

Buck states that Brad’s Reactor, which is a double reed call, has similar back pressure as a timber style single reed call. “It’s got better control than most double reed calls on the market,” quipped Buck. “It can get real soft and easy,” he added. These attributes are all due to the fact the Reactor features the new “Volume Flow Reduction” technology. Simply put Brad reduced the bore from ½ inch to ¼ inch at the exhaust. This VFR process creates the back pressure that makes this call unique.

I noticed the call is very easy to run and would take little time to master. It is designed to be a mid-range to finisher type call, thus is doesn’t have the high end ring, yet it offers the utmost control in the low end range. Of course, it has the Spit Tech construction built in, so it is guaranteed not to stick.

Currently, the Reactor is made only in acrylic and in three colors. Black pearl, Blue with white pearl, and chartreuse with black pearl. The Reactor calls sell for about $59 each. This is one hunting call that is sure to find its way onto your lanyard.
